Tuohy, of “The Blind Side”, Misses The Mark With Sandra Bullock

OneNewsNow.com reports Sandra Bullock “admit[ted] she was wary of Christians before she met the Tuohys” the objects of the new film “The Blind Side.” “Wow, I finally met someone who practices but doesn’t preach”, she said of the Tuohys. “I might not go to church everyday, but I know I do the right thing or try to.” Bullock said.

Sandra seems to think the point of Christianity is to live rightly.
Sandra Bullock you missed the Gospel entirely.

Just today I had a conversation with a friend who does not believe man is desperately wicked and also believes teaching others to “live by Christian principles” is the Gospel. We had an animated discussion, let me tell you.

Did Leigh Anne Tuohy ever think Sandra needed to hear of the sinful doom she faces at the hands of an angry God? Or is the Christian’s job to just be kind? Is it what Christ taught, to just be known as someone “who practices but doesn’t preach”? I think Jesus said something about “preaching the Gospel” right? Doesn’t the Bible say that he who wins souls is wise?

Why is Sandra Bullock confused? Because no one has told her the Gospel?

Now, I DO applaud Mrs. Tuohy’s work at loving the Baltimore Raven enough to make him her own son, but if you think that is the Gospel, instead of the result of the Gospel, then you need to go to www.NeedGod.com and find out the TRUTH!

Friend, you can NEVER be good enough to go to Heaven!

I don’t know, but maybe we should call the Grace Evangelical Church in Memphis and see if they are preaching the Gospel of Jesus to their congregates? Because this social gospel I keep hearing is a flat out lie that will send people to Hell.

Miss Bullock, you NEED to put your trust in Jesus to save you in order for God to forgive you your law violations (your lieing, your stealing, your lusting, etc…). ONLY JESUS SAVES.

Simply said, Sandra recognized a beautiful christian; a “nonhypocritical” soul. That type of christian person is needed to make nonchristians a believer in Christ. Bless Sandra and her family. Only God can judge: not us. I pray that this destruction of her family is healed by the love of Jesus Christ.

    • “Only God can judge: not us” is actually false. Just after the verse you claim means to not judge Jesus says to judge.
Many like to twist scripture to say they have no responsibility for another’s soul. But God knows you ARE; Jesus WILL hold you responsible.
Sandra is lost. She needs to hear the truth not “happy” talk.
Learn how to share your faith. Care enough for people like Sandra to tell her what awaits her should she die in her sins.
2 people die every second of every hour of every day. How many have heard how they can obtain God mercy? Apparently not Sandra Bullock by her own testimony (lack of one).
Be wise, seek the Lost. http://NeedGod.com is where you start…

      • kate says:

I am not sure you understand my point. It is not right for a christian to judge unless they have been forgiven from their own sin. Then, the christian must then ask God for wisdom in their judgement of another. I am not saying that Sandra is on the right path. But I am saying that if we are too critical of other nonchristians, then we will drive them away from the truth. APPROACH is everything. Happy talk is not weak and it can represent the truth. It gets the job done if the christian leads the nonchristian to the truth.

      • “Thou Shalt Not Judge” – Who Says?

…but you miss the essential point of the article. “Happy talk” does NOT get it done. And Sandra’s response PROVES it…

  2. Rick Garner says:

Patrick, why be so quick to conclude that Leah Ann Tuohy missed the mark? Just because the media doesn’t report that Leah Anne shared the gospel doesn’t mean that she did not. Just because the media doesn’t report that Sandra accepted Christ doesn’t mean that she did not. The key point here is that Sandra had the typical thinking of “I’m a good person” and that “Christians are judgmental hypocrites.” She meets Leah Anne and sees someone PRACTICING their faith instead of PREACHING it and her life is changed. Check out this post: http://richardtgarner.blogspot.com/2009/12/renewing-stars-faith.html

    • Right living (practicing) is not the Gospel, but is the results of the Gospel, Richard.
Unless a sinners sees themselves in the light of God’s Law they will not see their need to repent and may just reach the WRONG conclusion, as Sandra has, that Christianity is “nice” when it is only “practiced.”
Unless the sinners HEAR the Gospel, rightly presented, they will not know they need saving.

      • Rick Garner says:

Absolutely. “Living right” and “being good” is not the Gospel and does not make a personal relationship with Christ. My concern, again, is that you’re reacting to the absence of the Gospel message when you nor I know what Leah Anne and Sandra have spoken about. There’s no proof that the Gospel hasn’t been presented. However, what’s absolutely wonderful is that Sandra met someone who redefined a Christian for her. She seems to have met someone who not only claims to have faith but also lives it out daily. This is key and is nothing at which to scoff. Before meeting Leah Anne, the Gospel had no means of reaching Sandra. Her heart was hardened. But by meeting Leah Anne, God showed Sandra that her assumptions and notions about Christians weren’t accurate.

The focus here should be prayer. Pray that if Leah Anne hasn’t shared the Gospel with Sandra, that an opportunity to do so will happen. And if she has shared, that Sandra will ask questions and come to know Jesus Christ.

  3. ScottM says:

So, if you don’t like somebody’s reply, you moderate their comments and ignore them? Your word is law, isn’t it?

  4. Scott says:

Do you know that you’re not helping anybody by screaming at them that they’re damned to hell if they don’t do what YOU say? Do you know that an effective way to gently lead someone to the gospel is to befriend them, care about them, become involved in their life, and love them? Sometimes it can take years, but that kind of loving gospel is much better than your hate-filled version. Nobody wants to listen to somebody who tells them they’re worthless scum that God hates. Mrs. Touhy is sharing her faith the correct way. You could learn a lot from her.

    • There is no evidence “friendship evangelism” works at all. Only the preaching of the Gospel, as stated in the Bible clearly, can save souls. The Gospel is NOT “hate-filled” but indeed tells you the truth, which MANY hate. Are you one of those people, Scott?
Until you can agree with God that you are desperately wicked DESERVING of God’s anger and hatred for your continued rejection of His Son’s Sacrifice, then you will not see WHY you need saving. That is what the Preaching of the Law does, it converts the soul of the sinner. The Law of God shows a man his state before a JUST and HOLY God who is angry at sin every day!
Keep claiming your own righteousness and you will hear the words from Jesus Himself, “Depart from me, you worker of iniquity, I never knew you.”

      • Scott says:

Humans are relational beings. We were created to be in relationships with one another. It’s why we marry, why we love our children, and why we need friendship. Who are you to say that the Lord will not use those relationships to draw people to Him? Hearing the gospel and then believing in Christ as Savior is indeed the only way to be saved. But how do you expect that to happen best? Through prayer, love and care and gentle coaxing, or through screaming, vitriol, fear and threats?

My salvation is between me and my Savior. You don’t get a say, Patrick, so you should stop telling me that Jesus will reject me. My soul is safely in the Lord’s grasp, thanks to my loving and caring parents who gently taught me the gospel from an early age and showed me the gospel through taking me to church and through their loving example. Jesus drew me to him at an age so young that I don’t remember the moment. Praise be to God for that.

Do you attempt to love people, or do you just judge them an make them afraid of your angry, vindictive god?

      • The “Love” which you are so quick to accuse me of not having is actually what you must have to be courageous enough to tell the truth to someone. “Love” braves the anger and hatred, even the rocks and the bullets, to tell someone why they need Jesus to save them.
Waste your time on years of making friends and see where it gets you when you finally tell someone that their sins deserve Hell. Plus, when you preach the Gospel or share it personally with someone, you can reach MANY more people than just a few it takes years to be comfortable enough to speak the truth to.

Scott, I fear you are a product of the false gospel that says to come to Jesus for what you can get out of Him.
“Come to Jesus for peace, joy and lasting fulfillment!”
While that can be a result of Salvation it certainly is not a drawing card to Salvation. What about those Christians dieing in the Sudan? Is that their “Best Life Now?” Is that the good times they were promised them?
See, the problem is the Lost define “peace, joy and lasting fulfillment” VERY differently than Christians do.

You must give the bad news first so the good news becomes Very Good news.

Take a look at a Biblical Gospel presentation: http://OnlyJesusSaves.com/good

        Patrick Burwell, OnlyJesusSaves.com

      • Scott says:

The gospel of which I am a product is the Word of God. I am a Reformed Presbyterian. I have a feeling you’ll tell me it’s a “false” gospel, though, because it does not teach its followers to ridicule, demean and hate those who do not agree with it.

What you’re saying is that relationships are worthless. (Jesus wasted so much time cultivating those relationships with His beloved disciples!) There is no reason to form a lasting bond with a person and let him see your heart and your beliefs through your life, right? There is no need to lovingly and continually witness to that person, or to be involved in his life, because it’s all just a waste of time, right? If you don’t tell a person immediately after meeting him that he will BURN IN HELL FOREVER if he doesn’t accept the gospel RIGHT THIS MINUTE, then it’s all for naught. That’s what you believe, right? You swoop in and drop bombs of judgment and venom and then walk away, happy that you’ve done your “job” as you perceive it.

Your particular brand of theology leaves no room for grace or repentance, does it? It’s all works and action and fear. Jesus is nowhere to be found, is He?

My God is a God of love. He is merciful and gracious. He gives us grace we do not deserve and withholds from us the wrath we do deserve. My Bible does not show God to be vengeful and cruel, but loving and tender and merciful. I pray one day you will come to know the God of Abraham and Jacob, the merciful and forgiving Lord of David, and the loving Father of Jesus. He is your only hope. Not this anger that has your heart bound up in chains.

      • “The gospel of which I am a product is the Word of God. I am a Reformed Presbyterian. I have a feeling you’ll tell me it’s a “false” gospel, though, because it does not teach its followers to ridicule, demean and hate those who do not agree with it.”

You do understand Scott that the very thing you are accusing me of you are doing?
Why don’t you explain to me just how you think I have said you should “ridicule, demean and hate those who do not agree with” the Gospel?

The very idea you would put words in my mouth and then say they are wrong is just the kind of silliness I expect and often get from atheists, not professing Christians. That “straw man” argument isn’t going to help you make any points. Why don’t you get to the heart of the matter? Because saying “What you’re saying is that relationships are worthless” isn’t even close to what I said.

So, maybe you didn’t understand me- let me say it this way: How you live is the results of the Gospel not the Gospel itself. When people see how you live it makes no difference to them spiritually.
They might think it’s nice, but don’t Mormons live “nice” too? It is not what Jesus and the Disciples did to save souls.
They did not let their lives “be a witness” but they used words, and often.
They didn’t wait for someone to ask him about the “light within” as I’ve heard some say we should, but they preached of Repentance,
Judgment, Hell, and the Wrath of God to come. Jesus and the Disciples convicted men of sin with words, and then told us to do likewise.

The only time you hear of the Jesus and the Disciples ever speaking about anything else is when they were speaking to the humble.

The key to evangelism, the way to reach the lost with the Good News of their sins against an ANGRY God forgiven through the ONLY Mercy He provides,
is to make them see WHY they need forgiveness – to preach the way Jesus did (http://onlyjesussaves.com/WDJD.html).
Until a man sees he is GUARANTEED Hell forever he will not CARE about your Jesus. See, if you are honest you will remember you were that once. And you then, just like they, were not concerned about that whole Jesus thing.
To the Lost it’s nothing but a crutch for the weak minded and foolish. The Lost soul thinks no real man would be a Christian, only the immature and irresponsible. Some have accused Christians of needing mental help for the beliefs of Christianity. In China they condemn you to prison camps for “reeducation” for being a Christian.

The Gospel is not “bombs of judgment and venom” but the Bible Truth. And if you care for them, the ones you are trying to reach, you will tell them the truth now, not in 3 years, hoping they don’t die before you get the chance.

You are genuinely one of the most hateful people I’ve ever encountered. Peace.

      • If you, like Scott, believe no one needs to see their sin in the light of God’s Law before they will see their need for a Savior; before a sinner will truly repent and trust Jesus out of gratitude instead for a ticket to heaven…

…Then let me point you in the right direction to get this explained fully:

(This is not a teaching about Hell)

“Judge not?” do you say? ‘Twist not’ Scripture lest you be judged as guilty of sinning against God.

        Patrick Burwell, OnlyJesusSaves.com

      • Scott, et.al. that agree with him,
I found an old article that addressed this very matter… may you find it’s explanation illuminating…
Oh Taste and See that Yahweh is Good!

      • Jay says:

        Patrick,

We are all sinners. Tell us what your top ten sins are. I will be interested to see a prompt reply.

      • I never claimed otherwise. Indeed I said exactly that I AM a sinner that needs saving and only Jesus can save me. Jesus alone is the One who can save you, me, anyone, from their just reward of Hell that God, in His anger over sin, will cast everone into Hell for, those who rejects His mercy provided by the bloody sacrifiice of His own SON!
What didn’t you get about that?

  5. CC says:

Wow! So one woman plants a seed in another woman’s heart who had previously hostile to Christianity in general, and you’re complaining? Did you miss the part where Sandra Bullock said they had a frank and open chat about her faith? How do you know she didn’t? I’d rather people ask me about my faith because of my actions and not because I was walking down the street screaming the gospel message.

    • “I’d rather people ask me about my faith because of my actions and not because I was walking down the street screaming the gospel message.”

Well that is where you and I very much disagree. What if you are having a bad day?
Jesus preached the Gospel and said we are to do so as well. What Sandra Bullock said clearly shows she does NOT understand. To live rightl is not the Gospel, is not the way to be saved.

No, friend, it is the Gospel of Jesus Christ that saves souls, in spite of your “goodness”. If anything the Tuohy’s actions should be seen as their gratitude, not their way to be saved.

As I said in the article, what the Tuohys did was truly a great thing, helping someone who needed it, but that is NOT the Gospel.

      Patrick Burwell, OnlyJesusSaves.com
