OpEd: Drastic improvements seen in Christian films (OneNewsNow.com)
“Once upon a time, Christian films, frankly, were terrible. They were B-films, C-films, or D-films. That’s not true anymore,” he contends. “Now we have films that can compete with the world. Again, think about Fireproof [that earned] $33 million at the box office. This is a film with excellent production values, fantastic acting; and we’re seeing this more and more in our films.” -Doug Phillips is president of Vision Forum
My question to Doug is why it is so all-fired important to “compete with” those in the world?
Personally I like any Christian film, regardless of the quality. I cannot tell you how many times I have watched some of them. It’s the content not the quality, that matters. Professed Christian films, like “One Night With The King” are terrible in their Gospel presentation and theology, even though the quality of the cinematography was excellent.
One Night wasn’t even accurate Biblically. Now that is a tragedy.Yes, I agree Fireproof is great but not because it is good cinema! The price for the films is so steep most of us Christians had to wait for the DVD. But other films, like “Escape from Hell” and “Late One Night”, though theatrically terrible are loved for their content, though these were lacking Biblical accuracy too. I think “Herman Who?” might just be needed as a required course for all Christian-ographers.
So, though I would like to see more films like “Left Behind II”, where the Gospel is CLEARLY presented (see the discussion between “Chris, Ray and Kirk Cameron’s character”‘Buck’ Williams” outside the Bruce’s church)… Let’s have more of that content please, not more “show.”Compete with the world? I don’t see that in my Christian job description, do you Doug?
SEEK the LOST, PREACH the WORD.
-Patrick
