A markup vote will be held in the House Judiciary Committee at 9:15 Central time this morning on the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act.
The bill, which has been introduced in every session of Congress since 1997, would add “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” to the list of categories protected under federal “hate crimes” law.
Christian activists who oppose the legislation warn that it threatens the free-speech rights of those who publicly express biblical opposition to homosexuality.
Openly homosexual Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank, who helped draft the bill, claims the legislation “offers needed protection to those who are victims of physical crimes based on hatred.”
